Sorcerer 80

He kept thinking about the teleportation or translocation process and became increasingly concerned about appearing inside a physical object. Apparently, the air and airborne particles were too fine or too small or lacked the mass to affect his body as he didn’t think the spell swapped his mass with a mass from the target location so much as just relocated him. Testing of this theory was added to his routine that day, and he became sufficiently concerned by the results to be extremely wary of translocating anywhere he couldn’t see. Although at least things translocating inside a solid object didn’t produce some form of nuclear fusion explosion as he had originally been concerned that it would. It would still kill him if translocated to the inside of a large object like a hill or a building wall.

He had been concerned enough with the possibilities that he’d driven several hours out into the desert to try that out. He’d translocated a piece of wood into a hill a good three miles away without causing a nuclear explosion at least. He presumed that the wood that had been translocated inside the hill had just merged with the rock there in some way that didn’t result in nuclear fission or fusion. He couldn’t actually look inside the hill without heavy machinery and explosives. He studied the hill. He could perhaps break the rock down magically and also use magic to pull it out, but he had no idea of exactly where in the hill the wood was. And he hadn’t developed any rock moving, or rock breaking spells so far. Right. Something else to think about!

He did, however, try translocating into an area he had memorized first with his eyes closed, and that worked without a problem even if it was only five feet. Then he did it from the backyard into his bedroom without a problem. Hmmm. Interesting. At first, he was ecstatic, but then he realized he needed to be very sure that nothing got moved in the area he was translocating into. His folks had always been adamant about bedroom doors not being lockable, especially when he was little, but they had remained firm on the subject as he had grown older. Their main argument was the risk of being trapped in a room in a fire with no one being able to get in to drag someone out who had been overcome by smoke inhalation. They did have other similar arguments to add to that, but fire was the main one. Jason knew the reasons were all quite valid. Which meant his mum was quite happy to ‘clean’ his room for him if he let it get too messy. And he couldn’t have that with the translocation spell, just in case.

So, what to do? He thought about it and then persuaded Dad to let him get a shed built against the rear fence on a concrete slab for Jason to put his ‘stuff’ into and clear his bedroom out.

“Yes!” Said his mother which won that fight before it had even started.

Within a week, he’d had a firm in to lay a slab and erect a simple, lockable, shed which Jason dutifully filled one end of with boxed-up magazines, comics, and old DVDs from his room to keep his mother happy. He then made sure the other end was left clear for him to be able to translocate into. And that it was padlocked securely. Then he realized he wouldn’t be able to get out from inside the shed, so he paid for a locksmith fellow to come in and fit a proper deadbolt type lock. The shed could be opened from both inside and out with either of two keys, and he put one key on a hook inside the shed while adding the other to his key chain and thus ensuring no one could get in if he wasn’t around. Hopefully!
